Meerkat Adventures, Harvest Huts and Guy Fawkes in Year 2!
A fascinating week of imaginative writing, harvest traditions, practical maths and historical discoveries for our enthusiastic Year 2 class.
TL;DR:
- Created imaginative journey tales for Sunny the meerkat using descriptive language.
- Explored Christian and Jewish harvest celebrations, including building their own Sukkahs.
- Practised harvest poems and songs.
- Used Dienes blocks and bar models to explore tens and two-digit numbers.
- Investigated the Gunpowder Plot and interviewed Guy Fawkes through hot-seating activities.
Journey tales, building Sukkah’s and counting in tens
In year two we have been creating our own journey tale to send to Sunny the meerkat. We have been describing our school using adjectives, exclamatory sentences and expanded noun phrases.
We have also been learning about how harvest festival is celebrated in the Christian and Jewish faiths, learning our harvest poem and songs and how Christian’s go to church to celebrate. We have also been learning how Jewish people build Sukkah’s to celebrate harvest and then had a go at building our very own Sukkah’s!
In maths, we have been using dienes to explore counting in tens and making and breaking two-digit numbers in bar models.

Finally, in history, we have been looking at Guy Fawkes. Learning about his plot to blow up the houses of Parliament and have been taking turns to “hot seat” Guy Fawkes, asking questions we would like to ask “Guy Fawkes”.
