A brilliant start to Year 5 filled with adventurous reading, creative writing, maths, teamwork and outdoor exploration.

TL;DR

  • Began reading The Explorer and exploring life in the Amazon rainforest.
  • Created detailed setting descriptions using sensory language.
  • Investigated tenths, fractions and decimals in Maths.
  • Developed teamwork and movement through invasion games and rugby.
  • Enjoyed their first Forest School sessions, building curiosity and problem-solving skills.

Year 5 have had a fantastic start to the year!

In Guided Reading, we have begun reading The Explorer by Katherine Rundell. The children have been captivated by the beginning chapters and have enjoyed making predictions about what might happen next, asking questions about the characters and exploring the challenges the children face in the Amazon rainforest.

In English, we have been focusing on creating detailed setting descriptions. The children have explored how authors use powerful vocabulary and sensory details to build atmosphere and engage the reader. They have worked particularly hard on describing contrasting settings and selecting precise vocabulary to bring their writing to life.

In Maths, we have been learning about tenths as decimals. The children have been developing their understanding of how tenths can be represented using place value charts, number lines, shapes and decimal notation. They have practised recognising, comparing and ordering decimals and have enjoyed making links between fractions and decimals.

In PE, the children have been developing their understanding of invasion games, focusing on key skills such as passing, moving into space, attacking and defending as part of a team. They have shown excellent teamwork, communication and sportsmanship throughout the lessons. We have also been fortunate to take part in additional rugby sessions with Mr Marshall, where the children have further developed their passing and movement skills while demonstrating great enthusiasm, resilience and determination.

We were also excited to begin our first Forest School sessions. The children thoroughly enjoyed spending time outdoors, exploring the natural environment and taking part in activities that encouraged teamwork, problem-solving and curiosity.

We are incredibly proud of how well Year 5 have settled into their new routines and look forward to another exciting week of learning ahead!
