Whirlpools, Wormy Digestion and Seaside Comparisons in Year 4!
A busy and imaginative week of storytelling, science and geography learning for our brilliant Year 4 class.
TL;DR:
- Planned exciting endings to The Island of the Nine Whirlpools.
- Used direct speech, prepositional phrases and expanded noun phrases.
- Learned about the digestive system and key scientific vocabulary.
- Investigated how digestion works through a research project.
- Compared Ventnor and Shanklin using Venn diagrams and geography skills.
What a fantastic week we’ve had in Year 4!
The children have been working incredibly hard and showing brilliant focus, teamwork and enthusiasm across all subjects. Here’s a little update on what we’ve been up to:
English:
This week in English, we’ve been exploring The Island of the Nine Whirlpools. The children have been planning their own exciting endings to the story and thinking carefully about how characters change over time. We focused on using:
- Prepositional phrases
- Direct speech with inverted commas
- Expanded noun phrases for description
The class especially impressed me with how confidently they used speech punctuation and how imaginative their ideas were!
Science:
n Science, we continued our work on the digestive system. Year 4 learned new vocabulary such as oesophagus, stomach, intestines and digestion. We had great discussions about how food travels through the body and why each part of the digestive system is important. The children loved taking part in a research project to show how digestion works!
Geography:
Our focus this week has been comparing Ventnor and Shanklin. The children learned about human and physical features and created their own Venn diagrams to show similarities and differences between the two seaside towns. We had brilliant conversations about cliffs, beaches, shops, promenades and local landmarks.
We’re looking forward to another brilliant week ahead!
