A joyful week of special visitors, celebrations and number mysteries in Reception.

TL;DR:

  • Learned about teamwork, winning and losing during PE games.
  • Met guide dog Bailey and learned about consent and assistance dogs.
  • Celebrated Chinese New Year by making concertina dragons.
  • Solved missing number mysteries inspired by the NumberJacks.
  • Began learning about Ramadan and comparing it with Lent.

Reception have had a great first week back after the half-term break!

On Monday, we incorporated PSHE into our PE session with Mr Marshall. The class enjoyed playing lots of fun and highly energetic partner games discussing how we feel when we win or lose a game. The children were all great sports and all had a very good understanding that the joy is in the participating and having fun rather than always winning.

On Tuesday, we were very fortunate to have not one but three special visitors including a very furry one! The Guide Dogs Association helped to arrange a visit from Danielle, Lisa and a very good boy Bailey. Danielle explained to the class all about Bailey's role as a guide dog and all of the important ways he helps Danielle in her day to day life. The class asked lots of curious questions and were exceptionally well mannered and behaved. We learnt about Bailey's special harness that he uses when he is working and how we must never disturb a guide dog when they are busy working helping their human.

Once Bailey's harness had been removed that signalled that he was 'off duty' and the children were allowed to ask for consent to stroke Bailey.

We linked this back to our previous work on consent and how just like people, some animals do not like to be touched so you should always ask before touching a pet dog.

On Wednesday, the children enjoyed sharing their learning about Chinese New Year with their families. After listening to a traditional Chinese tale about Nian the dragon, the class made their own concertina dragon to play with and take home.

We found out that people decorate with the colour red and make lots of loud noises with firecrackers and fireworks to scare away Nian at Chinese New Year.

This past week, some of our numbers on our number line have mysteriously disappeared! We investigated which numbers had been taken and how we knew.

A few of the children have enjoyed role playing the Number Taker from the NumberJacks and have enjoyed creating traps to try and catch this mischievous character.

The class have enjoyed playing lots of interactive maths games on our new interactive board. As it has been so popular, we have a waiting list for children to ensure that everyone can have a turn.

As it is the time of Ramadan, we have been reading lots of fiction and non-fiction books about how Muslims celebrate this special time and looking at some important artefacts.

Over the term, we will be comparing similarities between Ramadan and Lent.

We also discovered a note from Fred the Frog explaining that he is off on holiday... we wondered where he may have travelled to!
